The Multicultural Music Group, Inc. and the Mott Hall School have been in partnership for 26 years, proudly offering the MMG Symphonic Youth Program to thousands of public middle school students in Harlem and Washington Heights. A free after-school music education program where students learn history through music and develop the skills to perform in a full professional orchestra.

This year, we’re pleased to have another full youth orchestra with 35 students.
The Symphonic Youth Program teaches students that music is more than notes on a page, it’s a pathway to identity, community, and opportunities. Each week, students explore pieces that connect them to the histories, cultures, and struggles that shaped the world’s music.

Students learn an MMG arranged version of Benny Golson’s, Killer Joe and the history of how hard bop challenged racism and expressed African American creativity and resilience.
New to the SYP repertoire this year, C Jam Blues, also arranged by the MMG specifically for early level students to learn Duke Ellington’s approach to jazz and the way he championed accessibility and equality, even through his music.
